Chana Dal Halwa

Ingredients

  • 1 cup chana dal (split chickpeas)
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 tbsp ghee
  • 3 tbsp sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 2 tsp cardamom powder
  • 5 almonds chopped or grated for garnish

Preparation

  1. Boil the chana dal in a pressure cooker with water for about 20 mins.
  2. Drain out the water, and grind the boiled dal into a smooth paste.
  3. Add half the ghee and the chana dal in a kadhai or pot and sautee at low heat.
  4. Add sugar and cardamom.
  5. Add the remaining ghee (this absorbs a lot of ghee). Be careful not to burn the mixture. Keep stirring.
  6. Keep browning till the ghee leaves the mixture, which will seem to be separating.
  7. Add the milk. It will become a very smooth mixture.
  8. Garnish with the chopped / grated almonds.
  9. Store it in the fridge to set and heat before eating.
